Cybermindset:
Your Vigilance, Confidence, and Action

Cyber.Pulse: Basic Kit #1

The most important part of your basic kit?
The way you think.

Cybermindset combines the three things you need:

1. Vigilance = A pragmatic approach to your cybersecurity

When you cross the street, you look both ways – not out of fear, but because you want to get to your destination safely. The digital world also has its own rules, and it too requires vigilance. Specifically, this means three things:

1. Be aware that cyber threats are very real

They are and will continue to be a part of the society in which we live. It is impossible to avoid them. We won’t overwhelm you with statistics; suffice it to say that the number of cyberattacks is rising sharply.

2. Know that sooner or later you’ll be their target

You don’t have to pay the fake invoice right away. Your data, information, and actions are valuable to attackers. In this age of automation and artificial intelligence, it’s not responsible to delude yourself into thinking that “you’re just a small fish.”

3. Wanting to be safe

It’s not about fear. Vigilance means that you value the security of your data, technology, and activities. To that end, you use tools and procedures that protect you. And those are precisely the essentials we’ve put together for you.

2. Self-confidence = Take control and stay calm

We don't like articles and tutorials that portray users as "sheep waiting to be slaughtered" with no real chance of fending off malicious attackers. In reality, there are plenty of things you can control.

  • ● How you respond to emails
    ● Which requests you accept and which you decline
    ● How you handle passwords
    ● Who you share information with, what you share, and how you share it
    ● What activities you consider acceptable
    ● How you respond to a potential problem
    ● How important you consider staying informed

Your security and resilience are therefore largely in your own hands. If you know which decisions are the right ones, you can better avoid the wrong ones and, as a result, use technology with much greater confidence.

3. Action = Turn your thoughts into action

Why do so many cybersecurity awareness campaigns fail to have the desired effect? They fail to influence human behavior.

That’s why a call to action is an essential part of the cybermindset. Simply put, without concrete steps, even the best ideas are useless.

The individual sections of the basic toolkit will always guide you toward them, and the final section, the Implementation Plan, focuses specifically on behavior.

You can simply read the articles and then close them. In that case, however, you won’t gain the most important thing – a true cybermindset and practical skills that will change your life.

But if you follow the calls to action, your behavior and habits will begin to change. And with them, your safety and security in the digital world. Then you can help others too – your family, colleagues, and community.

The Basic Kit works everywhere. You just have to start with yourself.

Next time:

A cyber mindset is essential. In the next episode, we’ll discuss digital manipulation techniques and how to combat them. We’ll add the Cyber Scam Detector to our toolkit.
